What is it?
If the haunted house that you are attending has installed AR Haunt technology, then you may (check the haunt’s schedule to be sure!) be able to use your smart phone or tablet to go on scavenger hunt inside of that haunt. Your mission is locate special “Monster Markers”. When your device detects the Monster Marker, the monster trapped within will be released and appear on your screen. At that time, you must use your weapons to defeat the monster in battle before the clock runs out and it disappears forever. There will be many monster markers hiding throughout the haunt. Each one of them releases a new terrifying monster. Your final score will will depend on the number of monsters you can find, the number of monsters you can destroy, and the accuracy of your shooting.
Has my local haunt been enhanced with AR Haunt Technology?
If you see the AR Haunt Technology logo at their location or on their website, then they most likely have! Look for this logo: How does it work?
When a special visual target, called a Monster Mark, inside a participating haunt is detected by a players smartphone, an animated 3d monster is overlaid on their screen. The player then takes aim and fires at the monster. If your haunt has been upgraded with AR Haunt Technology, then there will be many of these targets install at various locations throughout the haunt, utilizing a variety of horrifying 3d characters.
What do I need to do to enjoy such awesome technology?
–Download the AR Haunt app on Google Play or the iTunes App Store. The app is free to download and test, but there is a $0.99 charge with each use inside of a haunted house (plus the admission price of the haunted house).
–Test the app (see instructions below) to make sure that it works with your device. If your device does’t work, your local haunt owner may have devices that you can lease during your visit. Check their website for more information. Remember, testing the app is free, so if you are not able to use your device, you will not be charged.
–Make sure your batteries are charged!
–Bring your earphones if you have some. Your experience will be greatly enhanced.
–Have fun, and always remember to follow the rules of the haunted house.
How do I test my device?
Once you get the app installed, you can test it by selecting “Test Device” and pointing your device to one of the test targets found at https://arhaunt.com/demo. Note: You must use a different device (other than the one you are currently testing) to pull up the test target, or a printed copy to display the target. Your devices camera has to be able to “see” the test target.
My device shows the monsters, but sometimes they move erratically!
Some older devices do not have gyroscopes, and use accelerometers instead. If your monsters jump around too much after moving your camera from the target, the accelerometers may need to be adjusted. From the Test Device screen, click the “Calibration” button. Use the sliders on the screen to make the monster move smoothly with your phones motion. Press Begin to start. After you are happy with the motion, press Save. If your device is newer, calibration should not be needed.
What about the sounds?
The game sounds will play through your devices speakers. Depending on the haunt, the normal haunt sounds will also be playing. Your experience will be greatly enhanced if you bring and wear headphones. The “Test Device” function on your app will give you an opportunity to check the sound level and make sure that you can still hear verbal instructions in case of emergency. Just prior to entering the haunt, the customers will scan a special sound check app that will ensure that the volume is acceptable.

The Augmented Haunted House Application was developed in an effort to keep one haunted house alive during the Coronavirus epidemic. But as more haunt owners heard about the app, it became apparent that this could be a way to help the entire haunt industry get through these trying times.

How does it work?
The app contains a large database of high definition 3d haunt characters. When a players smart phones camera detects special visual targets, the character appears on their phone screen. The customers must then use their devices to destroy the monsters!
How does it work in my haunt?
The monster mark targets are simply paper printed with special symbols that correlate to the desired monster. For example, if the haunt owner would like to have a clown zombie pop up in their circus maze, just download and print the clown zombie target and mount it in the maze. When the players phone detects that particular monster marker, their phone will start playing the zombie clown sequence.
What do the customers need to do?
The customers need to purchase the app on line. The purchase includes the app and one credit for one haunt. They are able to purchase more credits if they choose to attend multiple haunts. Once the app is purchased, they can print a test monster mark to practice at home.
What about the sounds?
The game app sounds will play through the customers devices. To complete the immersive experience, the haunt owner should have all of the haunt sounds turned on (and props too!). Headphones will greatly enhance the experience. However, The customers need to be able to hear verbal instructions in case of emergency. Just prior to entering the haunt, the customers will scan a special sound check app that will ensure that the volume is acceptable. There are many cheap headphone manufacturers out there with headphones as cheap as $0.60, we suggests that the haunt keep a supply to sell to the customers, which opens up a new revenue stream.
How can it help duding the Covid19 epidemic?
–Reduces the number of actors-Actors are the life of a haunted house. But this year may be different. Regulations due to Covid 19 may severely limit the number of available actors. The haunt can make sure that the customers wear a face mask, but it would be very difficult to have the actors all wear masks due to the nature of their work.
